Practicing Assertiveness and Self-Compassion
Last week, I told my supervisor I couldn’t take on an extra task—and I didn’t spiral! I still second-guessed myself after, but I reminded myself that I had good reasons.

Session Goal:

Support Peter in integrating assertiveness with self-compassion while reinforcing committed action aligned with his values.

Milestones:

Reinforce progress in values-based action, deepen self-compassion, and explore future choice points.

Tips for Therapist:

Celebrate Peter’s willingness to act on his values and reflect on the internal shift that allowed it. Use ACT metaphors (e.g., passengers on the bus or the chessboard) to explore lingering self-criticism. Reinforce mindfulness of internal experiences without judgment and help him plan future actions that align with his evolving identity and goals.
